The UIS Italian Symposium 2026 is a two-day forum dedicated to exploring Italy's role in a shifting global order. Bringing together students, professionals, institutional leaders, and experts from across sectors, the symposium creates a space for dialogue on the geopolitical, economic, and cultural forces reshaping Italy’s position in the world.

Across two days at Columbia Business School in New York City, the program will examine key themes including global fragmentation, competitiveness, energy transition, technological innovation, and soft power. Through panel discussions and exchange among speakers and attendees, the symposium aims to connect Italian talent abroad with leaders and ideas that can help shape the future.

More broadly, the symposium reflects the mission of United Italian Societies USA: strengthening connections between Italy and global centers of policy, business, and innovation, while investing in the next generation of Italian leadership.

Giuseppe Pastorelli

Consul General of Italy

A career diplomat since 1997, he has served in Turkey and Hungary and later held Consul General roles in Boston and Toronto before returning to New York in 2026. He also spent several years in Rome at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, where he worked on promoting Italy abroad. His career combines diplomatic, consular, and institutional experience across Europe and North America, making him well placed to discuss Italy’s international positioning and the evolving global context in which Italian institutions operate.

Gabrio Santoni serves as Vice President of Santoni, the Italian luxury footwear house known for its craftsmanship and global brand presence. His career spans global client coverage, investment banking, and leadership in major international markets. Silvia Pezzini is an Adjunct Professor of International and Public Affairs at Columbia SIPA and a financial stability expert with roughly two decades of experience at major central banks and regulators in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom. Before joining Columbia, she served as Head of the Financial Stability Surveillance Division at the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, where she led multidisciplinary work on systemic risk and promoted the use of advanced analytics and AI. Her background combines policy, regulation, and macro-financial analysis, giving her a valuable perspective on financial resilience, global volatility, and economic risk.

Francisco Milone is Managing Partner and Head of North America Corporate & Traded Credit at Värde Partners and serves on the firm’s investment committee. Based in New York, he joined Värde in 2008 and was named Partner in 2018. His work focuses on credit markets, capital allocation, and investment strategy across complex and evolving market environments. Eugenio Donati is Co-Founder of AeroVect, a Silicon Valley company developing autonomous driving systems for airport ground-support equipment. Giulio is a second-year Master of Public Administration candidate at Columbia SIPA, specializing in Political Development. Originally from Milan, he earned his BA in History and Political Science from Columbia College and hopes to pursue a career in diplomacy in the Middle East after graduation.

Ferdinando is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Business Analytics and Artificial Intelligence at Imperial College London. He joined United Italian Societies (UIS) in 2023, when he launched the Netherlands chapters, and subsequently led the organisation’s expansion across eight countries. He now leads UIS at a global level, overseeing the organisation’s overall strategy and growth.

Caterina is pursuing a Master’s in Mathematical Finance and FinTech at Boston University. She is a former student-athlete at Adelphi University where she completed a Bachelors in Finance. With previous experience in banking in New York she will intern at RBC as a Risk management intern.

Gabriele is pursuing a Master’s in Sustainability Management, with prior experience living in NYC and Pennsylvania. He has worked in financial consulting roles prior to his Master’s.

Giovanni Leopizzi

Giovanni holds a BS in Economics and Finance from Bocconi University and an MS in Finance and Economics from the London School of Economics. He is a Predoctoral Fellow at Stern, where he conducts research in asset pricing, international finance and retail investor behavior.

Serena is an LL.M. student at Cornell Law School and an Italian-qualified lawyer, graduated from the University of Padova. She has worked at two American law firms in Milan.

Marco is a fifth law student at LUISS Guido Carli. He is currently pursuing an LL.M in Banking, Corporate and Finance Law at Fordham University, awarded through a merit-based scholarship in recognition of his academic honors.
